Şubat 05, 2015

Twelfth Session of the Conference of Parties (COP12) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be held for the first time in Turkey, Ankara under the auspieces of the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs.

United Nations declared that Turkey will organize another international organization after hosting 5th World Water Forum in 2009 and UN Forum (UNFF10) on Forest in 2013 successfully.

Turkey, for the first time in its history, will host the Conference of Parties to United Nations. It is expected that 100+ ministers and more than 5 thousand participants from all around the world will attend to the COP which was established by the Convention as the supreme decision-making body.

UNCCD and its Conferences are being actively followed by various stakeholders because of the fact that it draws attention to land degradation in the most sensitive ecosystems of the globe including the living conditions of local people.

UNCCD, entered into force 15 years ago, is deemed as an important means of maintaining sustainable development and reducing poverty.

Twelfth session of the Conference of Parties will consist of the meetings of different committees and forums such as Committee on Science and Technology (CST), Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC), Ministerial Meeting, Parliamentary Meeting, Business Forum, Regional Groups, NGO meetings and Joint Meeting for RIO Conventions.

Ministerial Segment of the Conference is of great importance. During COP-12, three different “Ministerial Roundtables” will be held and they will specially focus on “climate change”, “relation of desertification with water and drought” and “land degradation neutrality”, respectively.

Following the roundtables, General Assembly Meeting for the Ministers will be organized and critical issues will be discussed and negotiated during these session.

The decisions to be taken during COP12 will be delivered in Climate Change Summit to be held in Paris on December of 2015.
