Prof. Dr. Veysel Eroğlu, Minister Of Forestry And Water Affairs Met With Executive Secretary Of United Nations Convention To Combat Desertification

Prof. Dr. Veysel Eroğlu, Minister of Forestry and Water Affairs, met with Executive Secretary of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in his office.

Prof. Dr. Eroğlu said Turkey showed great effort for forestation and until now, 3 billion and 250 thousand plants have been cultivated.

Prof. Dr. Eroğlu also mentioned, “we have had all and any kind of arrangement and preparation works for Conference of Parties to UNCDD to be held in Ankara between 12-24 October and I believe wholeheartedly that it will be a successful and fruitful event for all stakeholders”.

Prof. Dr. Veysel Eroğlu also stated that accommodation and travel costs of some participants from the least developed countries will be covered by the Government of Turkey.

Prof. Dr. Eroğlu put emphasize on providing assistance to least developed countries, particularly in land degradation and deforestation, saying “rich countries should take responsibility and increase the financial support; as Turkey, we are ready to do so”.

“We Have Great Expectations From You”

Executive Secretary proposed to organize contests in different areas regarding land degradation, desertification etc. on the occasion of COP.

Barbut said 2015 will be an important year and G-20 summit will be held under the presidency of Turkey; she added “I have a request from you to put “combating climate change” into the agenda of G-20. If we manage to integrate combating climate change into the final declaration of G-20, it will be an enormous success for us”.

Barbut mentioned that the issue of climate change is generally assessed under the energy nexus, however, land degradation is a also the key element of climate change.
